1. What are merit badges?
Merit badges are achievement badges for achievements past the basic requirements for tenderfoot, second and first class. Each merit badge is for a specific area of knowledge. There are over 100 different merit badges that can be earned?

2. Why do I want to work on merit badges?
2 reasons:
  • They are required for rank advancement beyond first class (Star, Life, Eagle)
  • They are fun
Merit badges, in addition to being needed for rank advancement, expose the scouts to areas that they may not other wise ever get exposed to. The badges can be both fun and a challenge. Most scouts that go on to earn their Eagle badge earn far more merit badges than the minimum required to get the Eagle badge.
3. How are merit badges earned?
Merit badges are earned by working on the requirements for that badge with an approved counselor for that badge. This makes the badges different than normal rank requirements. In general, the scoutmaster does not sign off on the merit badges (unless he is a counselor for that badge).
4. How do I find a merit badge counselor?
The scoutmaster can provide contact information for a counselor for the badge you are interested in.
5. What are blue cards?
Blue cards are the record of advancement for a merit badge. As such they are very important to keep safe. While the scout is working on the badge, the counselor will sign off on the requirements that they have completed. When all the requirements are complete, the counselor will sign that the badge is complete and the merit badge has been earned. This is the record that the scout has that they have completed the badge. Keep it safe!
6. When is a merit badge finished?
When the counselor signs the card that it is complete, he/she will tear off one part of the card to keep for their records. The scout then takes the other 2 parts to the scoutmaster. The scoutmaster will tear the troop portion of the card off and use it to get the badge recorded in the troop records. The scout keeps the last part of the card. This means that there are 3 records held for each blue card. The scout has one, the troop has one, and the counselor has one.
7.  What do I do with a blue card when I finish a merit badge?
When the counselor signs the card that it is complete, he/she will tear off one part of the card to keep for their records. The scout then takes the other 2 parts to the scoutmaster. The scoutmaster will tear the troop portion of the card off and use it to get the badge recorded in the troop records. The scout keeps the last part of the card. This means that there are 3 records held for each blue card. The scout has one, the troop has one, and the counselor has one.
